Genre 1- Flyer for incoming Bloomsburg freshmen

I decided to do a flyer for my first genre. This genre was meant for incoming freshmen at Bloomsburg University. A flyer is a great way to get information out to students who are around campus. Flyers are often hung throughout dorm buildings and other campus buildings. When thinking about making this flyer, I looked at other flyers posted around campus. I used these flyers to get ideas for my own. I also thought about the CRAP and PAGE principles when making this flyer.

When making my flyer, I took into consideration many key aspects for making an effective flyer. I stuck to one style font to keep the consistency throughout the flyer. I also used the same color for the writing and border around the flyer. I put the same picture on the bottom of the flyer to make the club stand out. I also decided to put two personal pictures on my flyer to make students who are passing by feel connected to the flyer. By seeing an actual picture of students in the club, other students will get an idea about what the club is about. The two pictures shown are from two of the activities that were done with the club. The font size for the name of the club and date which the event is being held is larger to attract the person to these two important areas of the flyer. I also used the border on the side of the page to add key elements in the club. The information about these elements is then repeated on the poster.

The first example I looked at was about a week-long event taking place on campus. The contrast of colors on this flyer helped it to stand out. The black background with white writing helps to make the words stand out. They also put the title of the event in a larger font than the other information on the flyer. This makes the main points stand out more than the less important parts. The alignment of this flyer helps to make the information stand out. The days of the week are written vertical on the side of the page. The events that are going on during each of these days is written across from the. The proximity of the dates when this event is going on is close to the title of the poster. This makes it easy for the viewer to find all the important information in one spot. Some if the writing on this flyer is small and hard to read. The flyer would be more presentable if only the necessary information was on it. This would make the information stand out more. Students passing by this flyer may not want to stop to read the fine print that is on this flyer. They may see the title and dates but not look to see what is going on each of the days. Reducing the amount of words and increasing the font size would make this flyer more presentable.

My second example of a flyer is very colorful which helps it to stand out among other flyers. Many of the flyers you see around campus are grouped together on one wall. If you want your flyer to stand out, you must include eye catching visual elements to attract the attention of the viewer. This flyer does a good job with the contrast. The black background with white writing and an orange border helps it to be noticed by a person passing by. Another thing I like about this flyer is the background. They made the background of this flyer a picture of what the flyer is representing. The background picture is of a microphone. This event is open mic night, which is represented by this picture. I also like that the name of the event is in big letters and the date it right below it. The alignment of this flyer makes it easy for the viewer to understand what the flyer is telling them. All the information shown on this flyer is relevant and organized.

Example 2

My third flyer example has good contrast of colors. The black writing on the green background makes it easy to see the information on this flyer. However, the colors are a little plain. This may not make the flyer stand out on a wall with other flyers. The picture on the flyer helps to give viewers a visual element to look at. The picture describes the event that is taking place. I like that the information on this flyer is concise and to the point. This makes it easier for students to understand what is going on without having to spend awhile looking at and reading the flyer. Viewers and students who walk by this flyer will be able to get all the information they need about this event without having to stand there and read it in depth. The alignment on this flyer is a little off. Some of the information and wording is a little scattered. Overall, this is a good flyer that gets right to the point. If the flyer had a better color combination it would be a great example of a flyer.

Genre 2- Letter to Family or Faculty Member

When looking at the results of my CLUE project I noticed that many students who commute to campus were not involved with the different clubs on campus. One of these clubs included Best Buddies. One reason I found for this is because many of the advertising for these clubs are not presented in areas where commuters tend to go, for example dorm buildings. To get the word out about this club, I decided to make my second genre a letter to faculty members in the Special Education Department at Bloomsburg University. I wrote my letter to ask them to spread the word about this club in their classrooms. This would in turn get all students including students who commute the information about Best Buddies. When writing my letter, I used the PAGE principle to write a letter that was appropriate to send to these individuals. I looked at different types of letters to see which the right kind to send to them was.

I modeled my letter off of the formal letter presented earlier on this page. This letter is being sent to someone who is higher up. The letter should be respectful and follow a formal format. The font size should be consistent throughout the letter. A few of the important details presented throughout the letter are in bold. This helps to make these two facts stand out and be noticed. Another piece presented in this message is the address of both the recipient and the sender.

The first example I looked at was an example of a formal letter. It has all the key aspects that should be included when writing a letter to someone of importance. It contains the address of the person receiving the letter along with the person who is sending the letter. It does not contain any slang words and is written in a professional manner. This is something that should be taken into account when writing a formal letter. The information is clearly stated and to the point. The font throughout the letter is kept constant. I like how some of the important information is in bold. This helps the reader to be directed to the information that they need to pay special attention to. The format of this letter is very professional. It helps the reader to understand that it is an important document that should be looked at. When writing a formal letter, this example should be looked at. It gives a good view on what a formal letter should look like.

Example 1

letter_1.jpg

My second example was of an informal letter. The letter is hand written instead of typed. This is a key element when looking at the type of letter you are writing. Professional formal letters should be typed. It is acceptable for informal letters to be hand written. It is not going to someone of higher standing, and can be more personal. One reason to type formal letters is so that it looks professional. Typed letter are also neater and easier to read. When looking at the actual wording in this letter, we can see that it is going to someone that the author knows. The letter is not professionally written and contains information that you would not send to someone of higher importance. We can also see that the overall format of this letter is different than the format of the formal letter. The writer says different things that let us know that the person he is writing to is someone that he knows personally. The information in this letter is scattered and not presented in a way that makes it easy to read. The overall look of this letter is unprofessional and informal.

Example 2

letter_2.jpg

My final example was of a letter that was a cross between the first two.The letter above is not addressed to one single person. It is a letter that is meant for everyone interested in contributing to this cause. The text in this letter is informational and persuasive. It is trying to get people involved in their effort for clean fuel. The colors of the letter make it stand out and interesting to look at. The picture of the lamp on the side helps to give the reader something to visualize when reading this letter. The picture relates the topic in which the letter is talking about. This letter is written to the general population and does not have one specific recipient. We can see that this letter is somewhere between the example of the formal and informal letter. The way the information is presented and written is easy to read by the average person. However, it does talk about something that is important and taken seriously. We can see that the author wants a larger number of people to read this letter and become involved in the effort to get clean fuel. This letter is a good example to look at if you are trying to get people involved in something that you are running. The letter can be sent out to people or placed in a public place.

Genre 3- Satire of the previously made flyer

When thinking about satires, you must think about the PAGE principle. It is an important thing to think about when making your own satire. Another thing to think about is the CRAP principle. These two elements combined make up the main focus when designing something. I made a satire of a flyer that I did for Best Buddies. I used different aspects about the club to design a flyer that would be appealing to look at. The information on the flyer is exaggerated and humorous. It is good to look at different satires when thinking about making your own. Some of them can be offensive, but many are made to poke fun at different subjects.

When making my satire, I thought about the people who would be viewing the poster. I used different colors and pictures to catch the attention of students who are walking by. I redid my previous poster that was made to get students involved with this club. In this satire the wording on the poster is twisted. All things that people would not expect to about a club are on this poster. It pokes fun at some of the points that the club actually consists of. A lot of the points made on this poster are exaggerated for a better effect. I tried to keep the colors constant throughout my poster like Example 1. Another thing i focused on was using words that were connected to this club. This is similar to Example 2 and how it uses different words that are related to the topic. I also edited the two personal pictures on the page to show the theme that is presented throughout the poster.

My first example is a satire of a poster displaying Disney characters. This poster is taking well known Disney characters and twisting their roles. It makes each of the Disney characters posing in a way that is different than they usually would be. It is poking fun at these different characters. The layout of this poster is a little unorganized. The material seems to run together. It may be easier for the reader to follow if it was broken down into smaller parts. The colors and pictures used give the reader something interesting to look at. It is a very eye catching poster and very comical. It is a good example to look at when thinking of something to use as a satire. This artist used well known Disney characters which makes it something the viewer would want to look at. Many people know these characters and would be interested to see how the artist used them in this type of satire. Many of the characters are not seen in their usual forms. It is portraying different characteristics for these well-known characters.

My second example of a satire is dealing with smoking. Most people usually look for and read books on how to quit smoking. This satire shows the opposite, it gives ways to start smoking. It pokes fun at the smoking community. The top part reads, "A step-by-step guide to smoking twenty cigarettes a day." People do not want to start smoking. This ad is taking what it usually said and twisting it. The design of the book is eye catching. The colors and pictures provide viewers with an interesting visual to look at. The title of the book is written in a larger font, which helps it to stand out. The title itself is also very eye catching. It is not a normal title and would catch someone’s attention. They also add some text that continues to poke fun at smoking. Above the title is a phrase about a premium tumor. The person who designed the cover used different words that are often associated with smoking to make these two things fit together. It is a good example to look at when thinking about how to phrase different things on your personal satire.

Example 2

satire_2.jpg

My third example is a satire about the president. The author of this poster used the cover of a well- known movie to make a satire about Barack Obama. The designer of this poster is very creative. They used a movie cover to portray the president in a different light. This satire may seem controversial to some people. However, it gives us a good look at how we can use famous works of art and covers to make a satire. Twisting the words to make it fit what you are doing is creative. The colors of this poster and the picture on the poster help it to stand out. This poster would catch the eye of viewers who are passing by. The words on the poster help to get the author's views across. They use the proximity element to make the words and ideas on the page stand out and make it easier for the reader to follow.
